Your gas meter, year-round

For safety reasons your gas meter needs just a little care and attention.

  1. Please keep your gas meter free of snow and ice in the winter. Snow and ice can prevent your gas meter regulator from “breathing” to correct pressure. It can even cause your gas service to stop. Please use a broom or your hands to brush the snow off the meter. Don’t use a shovel, which will damage the meter.

  2. Winter is also a time when tiny gas leaks can occur on your gas meter. If you smell gas outside by your gas meter, call St Croix Gas @ 715.425.6177 and we’ll have a technician come to check your gas meter.

  3. Summer or winter, it’s never a good idea to hang hoses or other heavy items on your meter set. They can cause bent pipes and pipe leaks.

  4. Once every 15 years (gas meter life), each meter must be replaced and sent to have its accuracy checked. We do this in the wintertime. We always coordinate with the property owner by visiting, leaving a door tag if the owner is not home, and making appointments for the work to be done when an adult will be home. During the gas meter change out, the technician will shut off your gas service, replace the gas meter, and enter your home or business to relight your gas appliances. This procedure takes about 20 minutes.

  5. Once every 1 to 3 years, we travel all our pipelines with a special sensor to check for underground gas leaks. On your property, we walk right up to the gas meter along your service line to perform this check. We do not need to enter your home or business and normally there is no interruption to you.

  6. To avoid limited access or damage to your meter, we can relocate it for you. Charges are applicable.
